"National law firm Mills & Reeve and Spanish law firm Laffer Abogados have advised Argentinian international footballer Angel Di Maria on his transfer to Manchester United from Real Madrid for £59.7m – a British record.
Mills & Reeve's senior solicitor Andrew Macdonald and associate Richard Plaistowe worked alongside Laffer Abogados' team comprising partners Rodrigo Garcia Lucas and Jose Lasa Azpeitia on the deal, which is the sixth most expensive global signing in history. It is capped only by big-value transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain including Real's signing of Gareth Bale for £85m and Barcelona's payout of £75m for Luis Suarez.
Legal Business understands that the majority of the legal work on the Manchester United side was carried out by the football club's in-house team, led by director of legal and business affairs Patrick Stewart along with regular adviser Brabners.
In a statement commenting on the five-year-contract, which was officially signed on Tuesday, Mills and Reeve's Andrew Macdonald said: 'As with many of these deals it was all completed relatively quickly once the player arrived for his medical and sat down to finalise the contract. Clearly we were delighted to be involved in what is currently a record deal for a British club.'
Mills and Reeve's sports offering is led by partner Mark Hovell and was bolstered in 2013 with its merger with George Davies. Football club clients include Manchester City, Norwich City and Birmingham City. The team also works with a range of leading sports organisations, including The Professional Footballers' Association and The Scottish Professional Footballers' Association.
